Venus Figurines... When God was a Girl

Paleolithic 'Venus figurines' are some of the oldest known forms of Art. The figurines are mostly found in Europe, but have been discovered as far away as Siberia. Their function and purpose is not altogether understood, but they are generally thought to be symbols of fertility or representations of a female Mother Goddess. These decidedly 'modernist' looking, fecund female sculptures, characteristically feature exaggerated abdomens, hips, breasts, thighs and vulva. Over a hundred such figurines are known, virtually all of relatively modest size, between 4 cm and 25 cm in height.
